Cheesy they might be, but telling jokes is one of Alexa’s most popular features. While she used to have a very limited set of jokes (in the tens), Amazon has gradually improved the feature by adding thousands of jokes as the feature got popular. In the process, she also learned different categories of jokes and can now tell jokes by category. Most of the jokes are awful because Amazon as a corporation can’t afford to offend anyone but in a way, the jokes being this terrible and being told in a robotic tone actually makes them funny.
The following are some of the categories she supports and a sample joke from each category.
Alexa, Tell me a joke about animals.
Why are elephants wrinkled? Have you ever tried to iron one?
Alexa, Tell me a dirty joke.
Want to hear a dirty joke? A boy fell in some mud. How about a clean joke? He had a shower.
Alexa, Tell me a bar joke.
A pirate walks into a bar. The bartender says, “What’s with the paper towel on your hat?” The pirate replies, “argh,! I got a Bounty on my head!”
Alexa, Tell me a dad joke.
Why was the man at the cookout so happy? He met the grill of his dreams.
Alexa, Knock knock
Knock knock. Who’s there? Farrah. Farrah who? Fair enough, you wanna knock knock joke? You got one!
Alexa, Tell me a dog joke
What’s more amazing than a talking dog? A spelling bee!
Alexa, Tell me a space joke
Why do meteors prefer cold showers when they get home? They’re always burning up on entry.
When Alexa plays it safe:
In an attempt to appeal to everyone, Alexa refuses to tell jokes that can potentially offend a group of poeple. For example, if you ask her for blonde jokes or racist jokes she responds like this.
Alexa, tell me a blonde joke
I don’t have jokes about that.
Alexa, Tell me a racist joke
I don’t know any of those. I don’t think they’re very funny.
Well played, Amazon!
This is by no means an exhaustive list of categories that Alexa supports. Feel free to experiment with more categories and see if she understands. If there is a particularly popular category that we missed and that Alexa supports, let us know.
